Divorce a husband, lose a career … grapple with a murder.

TV journalist Elizabeth “E.M.” Danniher will tell you she committed two sins — she didn’t stay young, and she made an enemy of a powerful news executive — her ex. She used to break national news. Now her top story as the “Helping Out!” reporter at dinky KWMT-TV in Sherman, Wyoming is getting a defective toaster repaired.

Tough, funny and determined, Elizabeth wrestles with isolation, keeping a professional edge, and an evolving self-image. Is Wyoming — the land of cattle, cowboys, tumbleweeds, and fewer than six people per square mile — her new home or a road to permanent obscurity?

Soon she’s in a battle of wills with ex-football player turned journalist Mike Paycik, who might see her as a handy rung on his career ladder or a romantic partner or both. And there’s the matter of a deputy sheriff—missing or murdered? Elizabeth finds herself investigating at the insistence of a girl who’s set on proving her father’s innocence. Not that enigmatic rancher Thomas Burrell makes investigating easy for an amateur sleuth.

But Elizabeth won’t fade to black without a fight, no matter how final some might want to make her SIGN OFF.

I received a free copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to review. This is my honest review.
I believe this is Patricia McLinns' ' first attempt at mystery writing and the first book in the series. It wasn't a bad start, nor a spectacular start. It was a start; however, and the series has promise. The switch from romance to mystery had to be jarring, and McLinn started rough, then gained her feet.
The plot wasn't bad or good, just familiar. It takes a mystery writer a bit more time to create a style and complicated plots for a readership of mystery fans that already have favorites. From writing romance, McLinn has the goods on relating feelings and the the backstory to explain them. The rough start, in my view, came from expecting a successful NY reporter to fall so far emotionally damaged, because of a divorce, and have the reader buy into it. I had problems with that; she had risen to the top. That sort of success doesn't come from wimpy women. It made me dislike her in the beginning. It seemed, too, a romance was trying to start, but it didn't fit this first book. That threw me off, also.
It wasn't until she began to truly investigate that the book started to come together and my interest was engaged. If one is to write mystery, the mystery must come first. Love interests need to be tangential to the mystery. In my opinion, the attempt at romance in this first book, should have been left out. A reintroduction of a character can occur in the next book and take off from there.
I don't have any quibble with the writing. It was better in the second half, but I think that is when the author found her mystery voice and confidence returned. It showed in the writing.
I think McLinn will improve with this genre and find her full mystery voice. That is why this is rated this a three. She needs to grow and this rating gives her room to do so. You won't be hurt reading this book, but may enjoy watching this author grow as she adds to the series.

Decided to read this book for the soul purpose of the promise "A bit like Janet Evonovich but better."
I was sadly disappointed with that lie. I expected to laugh out loud at then funny hijinx as I do with the Stephanie Plum series. There were no funny hijinx. I expected to blush at the flirting, but alas, there was none.
Not what the cover promised, not what I was expecting, a bit disappointed.
After being a network TV anchor in St. Louis, Chicago, a correspondent in London, Washington, and NYC, Elizabeth Margaret Dannier now finds herself in Sherman, Wyoming. Her now ex-husband has sent her there to fulfill her contract requirements. She is assigned to KWMT-TV doing a consumer segment twice a week called, "Helping Out." Elizabeth is tough, funny, and determined to investigate a missing deputy sheriff and also, at the request of a young girl, to help her prove her father's innocence of a murder. A sometimes funny, mysterious, compelling story with a little him/her conflicts with a co-worker. This author is very witty!
So...I went looking for free books, and came upon this book. It's cover looked very professional, the author's name was bolder than the title and the name of the series interested me, "Caught Dead in Wyoming"....hmmm. I had a very bad journey through the state of Wyoming, so I was intrigued. I ordered a sample and knew I was going to get this book, I was hooked. She's a good writer, has a believable plot, and characters you are suppose to like and do, while others you like to hate. There are many characters to keep tract of and to include in the story so that takes time. At times it was slow but always something happens to bring you back in and wonder if your guess is right. I then ordered the other books and read them too. Can't wait for the fourth book to be available!
I do not recommend this book. Not everyone appreciates filthy, profane language.
Use of profanity shows a sad lack of vocabulary by an author.
Couldn't get past the third chapter. McLinn writes nothing at all like Evanovich as cover states. Example of my disappointment main character eating in a hotel dining room when a man approached . . . then she goes into a long dissertation about the house she rented and her trip to the hardware store and other stuff not essential to the plot before she gets around to telling us who the man was that approached her dinner table. I lost interest real fast.
Entertaining story. Convoluted plot at times. And too many characters whose names begin with M! Myrna, Marty, Mona, Mike and there's also a peripheral Mel and a Matt. Couldn't the author use some other alphabet letters? Chuck, maybe? Laura? It's very hard to keep the characters straight when so many begin with the same letter. Having a father and son be Roger and Rog also got confusing. Calling a minor character Brent one time and Hanley another time didn't help. If other books in the series are available on Unlimited, I would read them, but they aren't enticing enough to pay for.
